The wind howled outside, mirroring the storm inside Clara. She stared at the closed door, the door she had just slammed shut, cutting herself off from her family's attempts at comfort. The rejection email remained open on her laptop screen, a bright, mocking presence.

Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. Every muscle in her body was tense, coiled. She ran a hand across her forehead, trying to wipe away the sweat that slicked her skin.

She wanted to scream, to lash out, to… to destroy something. She felt a dangerous, volatile energy coursing through her.
